CATIA data is stored under Teamcenter Enterprise control. This enables you to use all the document management functions for your CATIA data and gives you the advantage of complete product documentation, which is the fundamental prerequisite for simultaneous engineering and digital mockup.

CMI enhances CATIA functionality by handling assemblies built in Teamcenter Enterprise. This integrates the bill of material from Teamcenter Enterprise with the geometry of CATIA which gives you an easier and efficient handling of your data.

Daimler chooses integration software solution from T-Systems

At Daimler, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models are designed using CATIA. Components are managed in SMARAGD (based on Teamcenter Enterprise), a product data management system.
CMI provides a link between these two stages in the design phase, enabling CAD models to be managed in Teamcenter Enterprise. This allows seamless management of CAD designs - from single components to complex sub-assemblies.
A further benefit is that the data can be accessed by Daimler employees working at different sites in the world (Germany, USA, Brazil).

The customer
Lockheed Martin Corporation is headquartered in Bethesda, MD., and is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services.
The corporation's core businesses are systems integration, space, aeronautics and technology services. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation is a world leader in the design, development, systems integration, production and support of military aircraft. Headquartered in Fort Worth, TX., its customers include the military services of the United States and allied countries throughout the world.
The challenge
With plans underway to initially produce 22 aircraft for the U.S. armed forces Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company required a way to improve efficiency by streamlining the design and engineering of its Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program. The JSF project is the largest military fighter project ever awarded, valued at $200 billion over its lifespan.
Lockheed Martin wanted to integrate from Teamcenter Enterprise (formally knows as Metaphase) *1, a product data management (PDM) system with CATIA *2, a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing three-dimensional graphics program.
Without an interface, data from Teamcenter Enterprise had to be manually transitioned through a complex and involved process into a CATIA program in order for it to be represented visually.

System requirements
The key task was to implement the CATIA Metaphase Interface (CMI) to streamline all internal processes by allowing information from design and engineering to be passed back and forth. While taking into account all requirements Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company needed to produce their Joint Strike Fighters.
The T-Systems solution
Starting with the off-the-shelf CMI product T-Systems had originally designed, Lockheed Martin contracted T-Systems to develop additional custom functionality needed for the JSF Program. The unique interface would allow CATIA (IBM 3D CAD/CAM program) and Teamcenter Enterprise (UGS PLM Solutions product data management system) to communicate with one another. The customized CATIA Metaphase Interface (CMI) tied Teamcenter Enterprise to native CATIA without any additional software between the two applications. T-Systems also created interfaces from CMI to other engineering products utilized by Lockheed Martin. Additionally, T-Systems is providing installation, implementation, training, support and maintenance services to Lockheed Martin.
Customer benefits
The new solution has helped Lockheed Martin to improve the efficiency and quality of their engineering process. The new interface allows data from Teamcenter Enterprise to be transitioned through an involved process seamlessly into a CATIA program. This allows for data to be visually represented without the hassle of manually integrating the alphanumeric data. The CMI solution succeeds in lowering the TCO because no additional products or maintenance is needed internally.
"After a rigorous evaluation process, we selected T-Systems' CATIA Metaphase Interface software product as the initial tool for interfacing CATIA with our Metaphase Product Data Management System for our Joint Strike Fighter Program," said Mark Peden, Lockheed Martin's Vice President of Information Systems and Technology. "CMI offers us an initial lower risk and more supportable, simpler architecture for the Joint Strike Fighter program as it brings new team members and suppliers on board."

Renault chooses integration software solution from T-Systems ITS GmbH

T-Systems ITS GmbH, the IT Services business has helped Renault to cut vehicle development times by streamlining the design phase. This has been made possible by the CMI (CATIA-Metaphase-Interface) integration software which links two separate data management systems. With this technology, France's leading vehicle manufacturer has accelerated its internal data flows.
At Renault, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models are designed using CATIA, the industry-standard solution. Components are systematized and managed in Metaphase, a product data management system. CMI provides a link between these two stages in the design phase, enabling CAD models to be managed in Metaphase. This allows seamless management of CAD designs - from single components to complex sub-assemblies. A further benefit is that the data can be accessed by Renault employees working at different sites. The first 400 workstations are to be equipped with CMI by the end of 1999.
T-Systems ITS GmbH is responsible for consulting, customizing and providing support for implementing CMI integration software at Renault. The IT service provider has operated on the French market since 1993. Through its acquisition of Groupe Spring last year, it has greatly expanded its service offering in France, particularly in the desktop services sector.
Renault produced more than 2.2 million automobiles and commercial vehicles in 1998. Worldwide the Renault Group has more than 138,000 employees in automobile and truck production.
In 1998 revenue increased to FF 243.93 billion (Euro 37.19 billion), 61.4 percent of revenue was generated abroad. With the corporate strategy - expansion of business activities through innovation, quality, cost reduction and internationalization - Renault achieved a profit of FF 8.85 billion (Euro 1.35 billion). In order to further expand international business activities, Renault and the Japanese company Nissan agreed upon a strategic alliance on 27 March 1999. What's the difference between a GMI and CMI server?
The Generic Teamcenter Enterprise Interface (GMI) is a Teamcenter Enterprise service, offering the main Workbench functionality for object display, expansion, etc. The CATIA Teamcenter Enterprise Interface (CMI) is a CATIA specific extension of the GMI service, offering CATIA specific functionality like transfer of data to CATIA, filtering CATIA relevant information, etc.

For what do you need the CMI Workbench?
It's the user interface which is used for the communication between CATIA and Teamcenter Enterprise.
What is changed with the handling of CATIA Data by using CMI?
No need to access to the filesystem anymore.Multiple levels possible (with additional translations / rotations).
What main benefits does the engineer have by using CMI?
The engineer can already use the product structure to add (or remove) multiple CATIA models with very simple (and logical) actions.Also CATIA data ist under PDM system control that means: no reader-writer problem and proper life-cycle handling.
What happens to the exisiting CATIA data?
The already existing data has to be transfered into work and vault locations. After that it has to be registered as a CATIA-model in the database and inserted into the product structure. The content of the file is not changed at all. 
What is the methodology of a CMI-introduction?
